On this installment of ST, we speak by phone with Frank Chaves, the artistic director of River North Dance Chicago, a critically acclaimed dance organization, founded in 1989, that continues to perform at leading venues around the world. This company is recognized for its skilled and emotive dancers, stimulating music, and bold choreography. Chaves, who's also the company's main choreographer (and who's been with the company for two decades now), tells us that River North Dance Chicago is especially dedicated to merging jazz, ballet, and contemporary styles of movement.
We are pleased to welcome to ST Alfonso Martin, a Principal Dancer with Tulsa Ballet who first joined the company in 1998 as a Demi-Soloist. This season, Martin's 14th with TulsaBallet, will be his last; he's decided to "go out while still on top" in terms of his retirement from dancing.
On this installment of ST, we present a conversation with Wayne McGregor, who's the artistic director of Random Dance, which is the Resident Company at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London; McGregor is also the Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. Indeed, he's among the leading names in the ballet world, known for his ground-breaking collaborations in the areas of dance, film, music, visual art, technology, and science.
Today, we welcome back to our program Marcello Angelini, who's been the artistic director at Tulsa Ballet since 1995. As a critic writing for Dance Insider once noted: "To look at what Marcello Angelini has accomplished [since he arrived at] Tulsa Ballet is to see what a community-based arts revolution looks like." The glorious revolution continues with a new production --- the final show of the 2011-2012 season --- called "Off the Floor: Creations in Studio K," which will soon be staged at Tulsa Ballet's Studio K facility in Brookside (at 1212 East 45th Place South).
