What Makes a Great Teacher: A Conversation with Ken Bain

By Rich Fisher

Tulsa, OK – What makes a great teacher? It's the subject of ongoing public debate, but educational researcher Ken Bain has spent more than fifteen years examining the attributes of some of America's finest college professors. His new book, "What the Best College Teachers Do" (Harvard University Press), follows the work and method of 64 great teachers in disciplines ranging from the hard sciences to the arts. Each teaches in his or her own way, but each also (and invariably) engages his or her students with provocative questions --- or else makes an extraordinary promise to them. Bain has founded four teaching institutes around the country, and was recently a guest of the University of Tulsa's Henneke Center for Academic Fulfillment.
