Weekly Homeless Outreach Gets to Continue

Night Light Tulsa

City councilors resolved a permit problem Thursday threatening a weekly event to help the homeless.

Volunteers with Night Light Tulsa have gathered under a highway bridge at Maybelle Avenue and Brady Street for nearly two years, giving food and essentials like soap to the homeless. The organization started getting city permits a few months ago to establish a formal relationship.

September's permit was in jeopardy after the Oklahoma Department of Transportation took issue.

"Just the possibilities for safety concerns, although, I mean, we do have insurance that was covering those safety concerns, which is what the council had said when they approved our August permit," said Night Light Tulsa co-founder Sarah Grounds.

Councilors and city attorneys decided they can approve a permit for the event on the city’s street and sidewalks.

Grounds said they had a good crowd at Thursday’s council meeting.

"We were going to actually speak at the meeting in regards to this, and they came out and said, you know, it was unanimous and 'We support you guys and you're good to go,' and 'go to the bridge and serve,' and so we did," Grounds said. "We went over to the bridge and jumped right in and had a great night."

The issue didn’t come up during the council meeting.
