OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a request for a new hearing for an Oklahoma death row inmate scheduled to die next month.
The nation's highest court handed down the order Friday to 52-year-old Richard Eugene Glossip, who is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection on Sept. 16.
Glossip was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death for the Jan. 7, 1997, beating death of Oklahoma City motel manager Barry Alan Van Treese. A co-defendant who is serving life in prison without parole confessed to beating Van Treese, but said he did so at Glossip's direction.
Gov. Mary Fallin has rejected pleas from anti-death penalty advocates to delay Glossip's execution. His death sentence has been upheld by four courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
