Sheriff Accused of Being on Wrong Side of the Law

Muskogee, OK – Sheriff accused of stealing cash from motorist

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) The sheriff and undersheriff of McIntosh County have been accused of stealing money from a man during a traffic stop.

U.S. Attorney Sheldon Sperling yesterday filed a charge of deprivation of civil rights under color of law against Sheriff Terry Jones and Undersheriff Mykol Travis Brookshire.

Sperling alleges in the charge that Jones and Brookshire, who are both from Eufaula, worked together to steal what was only described as a "large sum of cash" from a motorist on Thursday.

Sperling claims that the sheriff and undersheriff then stole or embezzled some of the money taken from the motorist.

Sperling says initial court proceedings are expected next week.
