Owasso Police Officer Charged with Assault, Reckless Conduct

Nowata Police Dashcam

OWASSO, Okla. (AP) — A Nowata County prosecutor has filed charges against an Owasso police officer accused of repeatedly striking a man with a shotgun during a traffic stop.

Online court records indicate that Nowata County District Attorney Kevin Buchanan filed charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and reckless conduct with a firearm against 50-year-old Michael Denton on Friday.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says Buchanan asked the agency to investigate the circumstances surrounding a June 14 traffic stop in which Denton was involved. Investigators say Denton is accused of hitting a man numerous times with the barrel and butt stock of a shotgun while the man was unable to resist.

OSBI agents interviewed other officers who helped arrest the man. Agents also viewed dash camera and body camera video.
