OU President David Boren brings his campaign for an education sales tax to Green Country. In an exclusive interview with KWGS and RSU TV, Boren compared Oklahoma’s education funding to that of a developing country.
The measure would increase the state sales by one-cent on the dollar. Part of the money would go to teacher pay raises. Boren says State Question 779 has constitutional guarantees to keep the funds from being syphoned to other causes.
If approved the measure would bring in an estimated $615-million dollars a year. Many Oklahoma municipalities are not embracing the question. They fear creating an education sales tax, will hurt their chances of getting new funding or keep existing taxes. Boren pledged to work with cities and towns, next, to find new revenue streams.
