Oklahoma House Passes Texting While Driving Ban

KWGS File Photo

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma House has overwhelmingly approved legislation to prohibit texting while driving.

House members voted 96-2 for the bill and sent it on to the state Senate for debate and a vote. A similar bill is already pending on the Senate floor.

The bill by Republican Rep. Terry O'Donnell of Tulsa marks the second consecutive year he has authored legislation to ban texting while driving in the state. Last year, a similar bill died on the House floor.

O'Donnell's bill would prohibit operating a motor vehicle while texting, emailing or using instant messaging on an electronic device while the vehicle is in motion. Texting would be allowed when a vehicle is stopped at a traffic light or railroad crossing, or for other reasons.
