OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Parents, teachers and other education officials are expected to voice their concerns over a set of public education principles known as common core state standards.
A legislative hearing will be held Tuesday before a House committee on common core. There is growing opposition, especially among conservatives, to the standards that were approved in 2010 and are now being implemented by Oklahoma school districts.
Common core standards have been adopted in 45 states and include basic requirements for students to learn in math, English, history, social studies and science.
Some opponents claim the standards are a federal intrusion into the state's public education system.
House Speaker T.W. Shannon introduced a bill earlier this year to repeal the standards, but Republicans leaders in the Senate have said they support common core.
