Oklahoma FAFSA Deadline Fewer Than Three Weeks Away

U.S. Department of Education

The filing deadline for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is fast approaching for Oklahoma.

Though the federal deadline is June 30th, Oklahoma is among several states that want the FAFSA turned in by March 1. Monroe Nichols with ImpactTulsa said for various reasons, only about half of Tulsa County high school students fill out the FAFSA.

"Some people believe they may not qualify for any federal aid for college. Some folks feel like the form is a little too much," Nichols said. "Some people have some concerns on putting their financial information."

Nichols estimated $15 million in free student aid are left on the table because of Tulsa’s low completion rate. You will have to get your taxes done to fill out the FAFSA.

"I know there's some people who feel a little hesitant to put that kind of information in, but it's all going to the federal government," Nichols said. "It's a federal program, so if you're filling out your taxes anyway, it's going to the federal government. It's secure. It's safe. It's not going to any sort of private vendor or anything like that."

ImpactTulsa is hosting several workshops to help applicants complete the form.
