For those unfamiliar: ATJ airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5, from 10pm till midnight. We always thereafter offer a 7pm re-airing of the program on the following Sunday evening, on Jazz 89.5-2, which is our station's all-jazz HD Radio channel.
Each week, we spin modern jazz, both recent and classic, across a range of styles -- from Mose Allison to John Zorn, Geri Allen to Joe Zawinul. Plus, the second half of our two-hour show, beginning at 11pm, invariably carries a theme.
This time out, that theme will be Remembering Orrin Keepnews as we focus on the pioneering work of the modern-jazz record producer and indie-label guru who died earlier this week at 91 (and who's pictured here with Cannonball Adderley). We'll hear cuts from such classic Keepnews-produced albums as THELONIOUS HIMSELF by Thelonious Monk, THE FREEDOM SUITE by Sonny Rollins, MUSIC OF BILL EVANS by Kronos Quartet, and so forth -- plus a few less-familiar but likewise-excellent releases. And in the first half of ATJ, we'll dig music from Peter Leitch, Stefon Harris, Tom Harrell, and many more.
