The great Bobby Hutcherson has died -- one of my own personal faves among the jazz pantheon, and thus a musician heard often on this radio program. He was, as noted in his New York Times obituary, "one of the most admired and accomplished vibraphonists in jazz...[whose] career took flight in the early 1960s, as jazz was slipping free of the complex harmonic and rhythmic designs of bebop. He was fluent in that language, but he was also one of the first to adapt his instrument to a freer postbop language, often playing chords with a pair of mallets in each hand."
So, on the next broadcast of All This Jazz, beginning at 9pm on Saturday the 20th here on KWGS-FM, our 3rd-hour theme (running from 11pm till midnight) will be Remembering Bobby Hutcherson. We'll hear from the legendary vibes wizard, composer, and bandleader in a variety of contexts -- that is, both as a sideman and a leader, both in concert and in the studio, performing in the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Nineties, and beyond.
Every Saturday night, ATJ delivers three hours of recent and classic jazz, across a wide range of styles, from 9 o'clock till midnight. (We also offer a 7pm re-airing of our show on Sunday evenings, on Jazz 89.5-2, which is Public Radio Tulsa's all-jazz HD Radio channel.)
From Geri Allen to Gerry Mulligan, Paul Chambers to Paul Desmond, Don Cherry to Don Byron, and Dave Brubeck to Dave Douglas, All This Jazz is delighted by modern (and postmodern!) jazz in its many forms, and we dig sharing the same with our listeners.
Join us! (Also, just FYI: ATJ playlist information can usually be found here, although you'll have to scroll down a bit...and we also maintain a Facebook page for our show. Thank you.)
