New Information: The Ten Commandements

Sallisaw, OK – Monument could be built on private property

POTEAU, Okla. (AP) A Ten Commandments monument that had been planned on the Le Flore County Courthouse lawn may instead be built on private property.

Former Poteau Mayor Don Barnes says the monument could be built along a major road in Poteau where thousands of people would drive past it.

Barnes and his supporters have raised more than $3,500 and had planned to build a 7-foot-by-3-foot granite monument near the courthouse until a federal appeals court found a similar display in Haskell County unconstitutional.

Barnes says the monument could be even bigger at its new location, if enough money is raised.
