National School Choice Week is Underway

File photo

National School Choice Week is underway for the fifth year running.

Shelby Tankersley with the National School Choice Week organization says their mission is to help parents choose the best option for their children from an array of choices.

"Those education options include traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, online academies, home schools and private schools," Tankersley said.

It’s not, however, about pushing one type of school over others.

"There's so many situations where a school may be objectively a great school, but a child may be better suited to learning in a different instruction style or with a different emphasis," Tankersely said. "It's just about empowering and educating parents in order to help them get their kid in the best school possible."

There are more than 11,000 events nationwide to help parents choose a school. Gov. Mary Fallin issued a proclamation recognizing Jan. 25–31 as Oklahoma School Choice Week. There are dozens of events across the state for parents from workshops to open houses.
