Oklahoma City, OK –
An Oklahoma City man who admitted to shooting and wounding a police officer has been sentenced to life in prison.

Nineteen-year-old Hector Escalante laughed outside court after being sentenced Tuesday. He told reporters that Officer Katie Lawson "got lucky" when he shot her April 29, 2010, in a failed attempt to free his father from a drunken driving arrest.

Lawson was shot in the face, legs and body but was able to return fire. She has since returned to duty and attended the sentencing in Oklahoma County District Court.

Escalante's brother 18-year-old Alex Mercado was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison after being convicted in October of shooting with intent to kill in the case. The mother of the two Vilma Escalante was acquitted.
