John 3:16 Mission in the Thick of Busy Thanksgiving Week

Tulsa's John 3:16 mission is on pace to provide around 5,000 families with free ingredients for a Thanksgiving meal at home this year.

Pastor Rich Blackburn said that's up from the last couple years, but they're working hard to help people spend the holiday with family.

"Not only do people have the opportunity to eat well, but they also have the chance to sit around as a family unit, as a whole family group, and to take a meal in together," Blackburn said.

Sandy Vaughn was in line for a turkey and trimmings. She's making the family meal this year.

"It's going to be a nice story to come home, because my family doesn't know I'm here," Vaughn said.

The mission is distributing food baskets tomorrow from 8:30–11:30 a.m. and 1–3:30 p.m. at 2027 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Blackburn said you do need to bring a photo ID and a current piece of mail with a home address on it.

"And that's just to match a face with a name, and then what we call proof of residency: some place that we know that they have a place to go home and cook their turkey," Blackburn said.

The mission is in need of side dishes. They have enough canned vegetables but could use sweet potatoes, instant mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. Blackburn said don't fret if you can't decide between jellied or whole berry.

"It's kind of split down the middle on that. You know, some people like the whole berry, some people like the straight-up jelly," Blackburn said. "I think everybody's been very grateful for anything, everybody who's been through the line."

John 3:16 is accepting donations at the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard site, 506 N Cheyenne Ave., 51st Street and Harvard Avenue, and 91st Street and Sheridan Road.
