Oklahoma City, OK – Rural Internet grants net applications

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Dozens of applications have been filed by Oklahoma groups for federal economic stimulus money to expand high-speed Internet service in rural and underserved areas.

Applications from Oklahoma total nearly $5 billion more money than will be available in the entire nation in the first round of funding.

The Oklahoman's Washington bureau says applications have been filed by businesses, nonprofit groups, state and local governments, universities and Indian tribes. They are seeking money to provide Oklahomans with broadband service and training.

The $787 billion stimulus bill included $7.2 billion for broadband projects, with the money divided between the Agriculture and Commerce departments.

Officials are expected to announce next month some of the winners of the first round of funding. The second round will be conducted early next year.
