"Hana's Suitcase" and the 2011 Interfaith Holocaust Commemoration
Tulsa, Oklahoma – Tonight (Thursday the 5th) will mark this year's Interfaith Holocaust Commemoration, or Yom HaShoah, which happens at Congregation B'nai Emunah in Tulsa (near 17th and Peoria), beginning at 7pm. Today on StudioTulsa, we preview the event by interviewing the woman who will appear as its keynote speaker: Fumiko Ishioka, who's executive director of the Tokyo Holocaust Education Resource Center. As we learn on today's program, Fumiko's all-important work has recently been the subject of a bestselling YA non-fiction book called "Hana's Suitcase: A True Story" (which actually grew out of an acclaimed CBC radio documentary that first aired about ten years ago). The theme of this year's Yom HaShoah is "Searching for the Lost" --- and it's a theme that's very much in line, as Fumiko explains, with the story of "Hana's Suitcase."
