Four Oklahoma GOP Lawmakers Upset by Festivus Pole

Matthew Keefe

A Florida man’s nontraditional holiday display set to go up at the Oklahoma capitol next week is not being well received by some state lawmakers.

A group of Republicans didn’t spend all morning performing feats of strength, but they are airing grievances about a man's plan to put up a gay pride-themed, 6-foot-tall pole in the Capitol rotunda to celebrate the fictional holiday Festivus from "Seinfeld."

Four lawmakers see the display as an attack on Christianity. Chaz Stevens submitted a formal request to display the pole. It was approved based on guidelines for any display at the Capitol.

Broken Arrow Republican David Brumbaugh says the display is an example of "a war on Christmas," while Arcadia Republican Lewis Moore calls the Festivus pole a "sacrilegious symbol."

The nutcrackers and sleigh already there, however, appear to be OK with the four lawmakers.
