Former TU Player Sickle Cell Victim

By AP

Tulsa, OK – Ex-Tulsa player died of sickle cell complications

TULSA, Okla. (AP) The Medical Examiner's office says an ex-University of Tulsa football player who participated in an unsanctioned boxing match died from sudden exertion due to sickle cell trait complications.

A spokeswoman for the office said Tuesday a full autopsy report on what caused George Clinkscale's death won't be done for several weeks.

Clinkscale died Sept. 22 after boxing in Guts Church's Fight Night VI. Witnesses said he had cramping and severe pain after the bout.

His family is pursuing a civil lawsuit against the church and owners, Bill and Sandy Scheer. Attorney Trevor Henson says had Guts Church officials followed Oklahoma laws, they would've had a pre-fight physical performed and a doctor at ringside.

The church's attorney, Derrick Teague, didn't immediately return a call after hours on Tuesday seeking comment.
