Fireworks and Drought
Lawton, OK – Okla. sees fireworks show changes due to drought
LAWTON, Okla. (AP) The threat of wildfires has put a damper on Independence Day fireworks celebrations in many Oklahoma communities.
Burn bans are in effect in at least 34 of the state's 77 counties, although five were to be lifted before July 4.
The bans vary in scope.
In McClain County, organized fireworks displays will be allowed with a permit and with firefighters on hand for the entire show.
But not in Comanche County, where a wildfire scorched 5,500 acres and destroyed 13 homes last week. The fire began on Fort Sill Army post in Lawton and spread to Medicine Park.
Post officials have canceled their customary Army Band performance of the "1812 Overture" this weekend because the closing cannon fire would risk starting wildfires.
The base also canceled its fireworks show.
