Education, Prison Boards to Discuss Agency Budgets

State of Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The departments of education and corrections — two of Oklahoma's largest state agencies — will be working on budgets seeking tens of millions of dollars in new government spending that likely won't be approved by the Legislature.

The governing boards of both agencies are meeting separately Thursday in Oklahoma City to consider budget requests for the upcoming fiscal year that begins July 1.

The Department of Corrections is seeking more than $84 million in new spending to cover pay raises for prison workers, offender growth and infrastructure improvements, among other things. The agency received $470 million for the current fiscal year and wants more than $555 million for upcoming fiscal year.

The Board of Education is expected to discuss that agency's budget request, but details have not been released.
