OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma City man charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his father - who was Oklahoma's labor commissioner - has been found mentally competent to stand trial.
An Oklahoma County district judge on Wednesday found 28-year-old Christian Costello competent for trial for the August 2015 stabbing death of Mark Costello at a fast-food restaurant.
Trial is set for April 3, 2017.
Christian Costello's family has said he suffers from a mental illness and during an August hearing he delivered a rambling statement in which he admitted killing his father as part of a "military operation."
Costello's attorney, Chief Public Defender Bob Ravitz, told reporters Wednesday that Costello should be found not guilty by reason of insanity and spend the rest of his life in a mental hospital.
