TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — Cherokee Nation Businesses and Cherokee Nation Entertainment plan to continue an annual tradition of donating and delivering supplies to local classrooms in need.
Employee volunteers donate annually to the school supply drive throughout the month of August. This year, they donated more than 3,500 items including basic learning tools, backpacks and classroom necessities to schools located throughout the tribe's 14-county jurisdiction.
Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker says Cherokee Nation employees are an integral part of the communities they live and work in. Baker says employees know firsthand just how invaluable this kind of assistance and volunteerism can be to a young student in the local school system.
Fifteen Cherokee Nation properties participated in this year's school supply drive and have designated a school to receive the school supplies.
