Oklahoma City, OK – Governor remains optimistic on budget deal

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Gov. Brad Henry remains optimistic an agreement will be reached with House and Senate leaders on how much to spend from the state's Rainy Day Fund to fill this year's budget hole.

But during The Associated Press' legislative forum on Friday, Henry maintained his position that a larger portion of the constitutional reserve fund must be spent this year.

Henry has proposed using $485 million from the fund this year to help close a $729 million budget gap and provide supplemental funding to health care, education and prisons. House and Senate leaders have said they don't want to spend more than $225 million.

Henry urged the Legislature to tap most of the $600 million in the fund this year, when all three conditions have been met for accessing the reserve funds.
