BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (AP) — The Broken Arrow City Council has voted to fire the city manager, who was criticized by a neighborhood group for how the city handled a proposal to build an American Indian casino in the Tulsa suburb.

Officials say David Wooden will receive six months of severance pay, or about $71,750 plus benefits.

Wooden wasn't present when council members terminated his employment late Friday, but in a statement he said he has enjoyed his career.

The Tulsa World reports that Broken Arrow Citizens Against Neighborhood Gaming criticized Wooden and others for not informing residents when they first learned the Kialegee Tribal Town planned to build a casino.

The group's spokesman, Jared Cawley, said he thought Wooden's firing was unfortunate but the right decision.
