Average State Gas Price Could Dip Below $2 a Gallon Soon

Oklahoma’s state average gas price has fallen 55 days in a row and now sits at $2.07 a gallon.

AAA’s Chuck Mai said it could go even lower.

"We may see a price average down below $2 a gallon by the end of the year," Mai said. "That's only seven days away, so it's entirely likely because the price of crude oil continues to drift lower."

In six months, the statewide average for a gallon of gas has fallen more than 40 percent, from $3.53 in June to $2.07 today.

"The last few months have been unprecedented. We've never seen oil prices or gasoline prices drop so fast, so much," Mai said.

Mai says the drop is due to a combination of cheap crude, seasonally low demand, and production levels at a near 30-year high.

Oklahoma’s current average price is higher than only Missouri’s $2.05, and it’s slightly lower than Kansas and Texas’ prices.

"If you're heading north or south or northeast, you'll find some pretty good prices, much lower than the rest of the country. Our national average right now is $2.38," Mai said.

Tulsa has the lowest citywide average price among major U.S. cities at $1.93. Some Oklahoma City stations are selling gas for under $1.70.
