OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma's insurance commissioner is warning residents to protect their families and property during the winter season by having plans in place to stay safe and warm.

Commissioner John Doak says residents should prepare for winter by winterizing cars, insulating homes, making sure chimneys are cleaned and trimming trees to remove dead branches to prevent weakened limbs from falling on homes, cars or people. Doak also recommends assembling an emergency winter storm safety kit.

Officials say dozens of people die every year from exposure to cold temperatures, weather-related auto wrecks and improper use of heating devices.

Oklahoma got its first shot of winter weather this week, and frigid temperatures are expected to last for several more days throughout much of the state.
