The U.S. Geological Survey says an earthquake has shaken parts of northern Oklahoma.
The 4.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday about 12 miles northwest of Medford, about 120 miles north of Oklahoma City and 100 miles northwest of Cushing, a key oil hub where a magnitude 5.0 on Sunday night damaged homes and businesses. No damage or injuries was immediately reported following the latest quake in Medford.
Scientists have linked Oklahoma's increase in earthquakes to the underground disposal of wastewater from oil and gas production. Earlier Tuesday, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission's Oil and Gas Division issued an order requiring the operators of 58 disposal wells near Cushing to either close or reduce disposal volumes.
