TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Two convenience store owners have been sentenced to federal prison for distributing more than 127 kilograms of synthetic cannabinoids.
U.S. Attorney Danny Williams says 37-year-old Gaurav Sehgal of Grove and 37-year-old Iqbal Makkar of Bentonville, Arkansas were sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in Tulsa. Williams says Sehgal was sentenced to seven years in prison and Makkar to about eight.
A federal grand jury indicted the men in November 2013 and they were found guilty by a jury earlier this year. Prosecutors alleged they operated a convenience store in Grove from November 2011 to January 2013 where a controlled dangerous substance known as XLR11 was stored and distributed.
XLR11 is a synthetic substance typically sprayed on inert plant material that mimics the effects as THC, a psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.
