Tulsa, OK – Much of food stamp money in Okla. spent at Walmart

TULSA, Okla. (AP) A published report says much of the nearly $1.2 billion in food stamp expenditures in Oklahoma went to Wal-Mart stores.

According to data supplied by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to the Tulsa World, Wal-Mart brought in about $506 million between July 2009 and March.

Flooding Rains

Undated – Beneficial rain falls across Oklahoma

McALESTER, Okla. (AP) Heavy rain has led to flooding problems in eastern Oklahoma.

LeFlore County Emergency Management Director Michael Davidson says emergency officials helped rescue motorists when two vehicles were swept off a bridge into a creek Sunday afternoon. Davidson says no one was hurt.

He also said some houses had been flooded, but no evacuations had been ordered. Davidson says all major streets and creeks in the area were flooded.

Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. police sergeant accused in sex abuse case

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Prosecutors say an Oklahoma City police sergeant who was honored for his selfless dedication to children had sexually abused four teenage boys in his care.

The Oklahoman reports that 44-year-old Maurice A. Martinez faces 32 felony counts of sexual child abuse. He also faces charges of threatening a witness, child pornography possession and child abuse.

Disaster Approved

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Gov. Mary Fallin says the White House has approved a request for federal disaster assistance for Atoka County in the wake of a tornado that killed two people.

The announcement means individuals and business owners affected by the April 14 tornado in Tushka may now qualify for assistance with housing repairs or temporary housing.

Tulsa, OK – Councilman expects AG decision on probe of mayor

TULSA, Okla. (AP) A Tulsa city councilor says he expects a decision next week by the attorney general on whether there will be an investigation into allegations of wrongdoing against Mayor Dewey Bartlett.

Councilman John Eagleton sent documents earlier this month supporting the allegations along with nearly 1,900 voter signatures supporting an investigation.

Tulsa Refinery Fire

Tulsa, OK – Oil tank fire under control at Tulsa refinery

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Authorities say an oil tank fire at a Tulsa refinery is now under control.

A fire broke out in an oil tank about 9:30 p.m. Friday and that no one was injured in the blaze. The extent of the damage wasn't immediately known.

Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Tim Smallwood said the fire was under control and that firefighters were returning to other duties by late Friday night.

Kangaroo Insured

Broken Arrow, OK – Anonymous donor buys insurance for Okla. kangaroo

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (AP) An Oklahoma woman says an anonymous "angel" has bought a $50,000 insurance policy to help her keep her kangaroo as a therapy pet.

The Broken Arrow city council is deciding whether to grant Christie Carr an exemption and allow her to keep the partially paralyzed kangaroo named Irwin. Having the insurance policy for any injuries inflicted by Irwin would be among the exemption requirements.
