Tulsa, Okla. – Students get their first holiday next week, and many more Americans than last year will be taking advantage. AAA reports that the number of Americans expected to travel over the Labor Day weekend is up almost 10 percent from last year.
AAA Oklahoma spokesman Danial Karnes says the number of Oklahomans traveling is expected to be up by about nine percent.
Oklahoma City – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Following nearly a month-and-a-half of searing temperatures across Oklahoma, about half of the state is now in a mild drought.
The Oklahoma Climatological Survey in Norman said Thursday that the U.S. Drought Monitor shows the southeastern half of Oklahoma in a "flash drought." The OCS says a flash drought occurs when abnormally dry weather combines with very hot temperatures in a short period of time.
Chelesa, OK – Okla police chief charged with drug counts
CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) Rogers County prosecutors have charged the police chief of Chelsea with 12 felony drug counts.
Jeremy Wayne Murrell faces a Sept. 1 arraignment on charges of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. The 34-year-old Murrell was arrested Aug. 13 on the complaints, posted $12,000 bail and was released.
Chelsea Town Coordinator Kenny Weast says Murrell, who has been police chief for more than a year, was placed on indefinite paid leave.
Oklahoma City, OK – 60 Okla. Guard ag soldiers headed to Afghanistan
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) More than 60 Oklahoma National Guard soldiers will be honored as they depart for an agricultural mission in Afghanistan.
The farewell ceremony for the 2-45th Agri-Business Development Team will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Mustang. It will replace another agribusiness unit that already deployed.
Grove, Oklahoma – For the 4th time in 2 years, Delaware County voters rejected a sales tax increase to expand the county jail. Now inmates are being released and bonds are being lowered to reduce over crowding. The current jail was built to house 62 inmates- but has about 70 prisoners right now. The tax proposal would have added 100- beds to the jail.
