Tulsa Pediatrician Elected President of AAP

Tulsa, Oklahoma – Tulsa's Dr. Robert Block, a world leader in pediatrics and creator of the new sub-specialty of child abuse pediatrics, is the new president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Block is the Chair of OU's School of Community Medicine, but will step down to lead the Academy. In his new role, Dr. Block will represent the group at the federal level.

This weekend's planned Quran burning in Florida is drawing the condemnation from religious people across the nation, including here in Tulsa.

The interim director of the Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry, The Reverend Mark Gibbens-Hickman, says the burning the Quran will not improve tolerance.He says people need not believe alike to love alike.

Hickman says the problem is not the Quran, but the people who distort the Quran.

Book Burning Denounced

Tulsa, OK – OKC religious leaders denounce Quran burning

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A group of religious leaders from across Oklahoma City is joining together to denounce a Florida pastor's plan to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11.

Church leaders gathered Wednesday at the Church of the Open Arms as a sign of solidarity for the city's Muslim community.

The leader of an Oklahoma Islamic group and a state senator whose brother was killed in the Sept. 11 attack also spoke at the event.

Sales Tax Update

Tulsa, OK – The City of Tulsa's sales tax collections for mid July to mid August, as reported by the Oklahoma Tax Commission, are below last year's totals, but higher than the budget estimate for the month.

Actual tax received is $16,252,172, or 2.3 percent below the $16,641,187 collected during the same period last year. That amount, however, was 2.9 percent above the budget estimate for the period - $15,793,000.

Oklahoma City, OK – Remnants of Hermine move north, buffeting Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine (hur-MEEN') have brought persistent rain, strong winds and at least one tornado to southern Oklahoma.

The National Weather Service said a tornado touched down briefly about six miles south of Marietta in far southern Oklahoma late Wednesday, causing no injuries or damage.

Officials Urge Hertz Rejection

Tulsa, OK – Local leaders are coming out in opposition to the take over of Tulsa based Dollar-Thrifty by the Hertz Rent-A-Car Company.

Chamber of Commerce executives in Tulsa are urging Dollar-Thirty Auto Group stockholders to reject Hertz $41 per share offer for DTAG stock. The officials fear if the takeover is successful the 700 Tulsa DTAG jobs will evaporate or be moved out of state or to Oklahoma City.

A vote is set for next Thursday on the Hertz offer.

Here Comes Hermine

Oklahoma City, OK – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The National Weather Service says the remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine are expected to bring heavy rain and minor to moderate flooding to Oklahoma.

Flood watches have been issued through Thursday morning for all but far northwestern Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Panhandle.

The weather service said about five inches of rain is expected across Oklahoma through Thursday with local amounts of up to eight inches in the northeast.
