City Hires Tax Auditors

Tulsa, OK – Tulsa hiring auditors to boost tax collections

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Tulsa officials say the city plans to hire private auditors in an effort to increase collections of delinquent sales taxes.

Mayor Dewey Bartlett signed a contract in principle last May with Revenue Discovery Systems of Birmingham, Ala., before the Oklahoma Legislature passed a law that allows only the state Tax Commission to handle sales-tax collections.

The city has sued over the new law.

Tulsa, OK – The Tulsa City Council will go behind closed doors today to discuss a lawsuit filed to block a charter change election. If approved, the question would make the city attorney's position elective rather than appointed.


The council will also discuss allowing the fire department to charge a user fee for responding to car wrecks.

Missing Tulsa Teen

Tulsa, OK – Tulsa Police are searching for 19-year-old Gabriel Claxton. He was last seen at the Greyhound bus station downtown on November 10th.

He told a friend he was going to visit family but never arrived and no ticket was issued. Police fear for his safety because of a history of depression.

State Lawmakers Surrender

Oklahoma City, OK – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A member of the Oklahoma House and a former member of the state Senate who face felony bribery charges have turned themselves in at the Oklahoma County jail.

County sheriff's spokesman Mark Myers says former Sen. Debbe Leftwich of Oklahoma City was booked at 10 a.m. and state Rep. Randy Terrill of Moore followed at 10:15 a.m. Myers says both have already left the jail.

Terrill and Leftwich are scheduled to make their initial court appearances in the case Monday afternoon.

Tulsa, OK – Presiding District Court Judge Tom Thornbrugh administers the oath of office to Tulsa County Elected officials. District One Commissioner John Smalligo, District Three Commissioner Fred Perry and Tulsa County Assessor Ken Yazzel were sworn in this morning at the Tulsa County Court House. All three won re-election last November and began their new terms today

Fatal Crash

Muskogee, OK – Woman killed, toddler injured in Muskogee crash

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) Police say a 24-year-old Porter woman is dead and a 3-year-old boy riding in her car is recovering from injuries he suffered in a traffic accident at Muskogee.

An accident report identified the woman killed in the crash Saturday as Cassandra Jade Edgar. The report said she was not wearing a seat belt when her car collided with an SUV at the intersection of U.S. 69 and a county road.

New Voting Machines

Oklahoma City, OK – Officials seek bids for new Okla. voting machines

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A top state election official says the voting machines that have recorded Oklahomans' ballots for 18 years will be replaced before the 2012 general election.

State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax (ZEER'-ee-ax) told The Oklahoman newspaper that the optical-scanner machines in use since 1992 have lasted much longer than their 10-year life expectancy, but parts to repair them are getting hard to find.
