WNBA May Play in Tulsa

Tulsa, OK – A group of businessmen, business women and community leaders from Tulsa and Oklahoma City today reported progress and expressed confidence in their efforts to bring professional Women's National Basketball Association franchise to Tulsa. Their goal is to begin playing home games at the BOK Center in June 2010.

Test Results Delay

Tulsa, OK – TULSA, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma school districts won't be getting the results of key tests on student exams until late August.

Most schools were expecting test results this week.

Officials say the delay in getting results for the No Child Left Behind testing is because the state raised proficiency standards on the exams.

Candidate Bows Out

Tulsa, OK – Tulsa mayoral candidate withdraws from race

TULSA, Okla. (AP) A Tulsa police officer has withdrawn his name as a candidate for mayor of the city.

Officer Cleon Burrell says he wasn't aware that the city's employee manual prohibits current employees from running for a city office.

Burrell says he could quit but still has bills to pay. His name will remain on the ballot because the deadline for removing it has passed.

Progress on Reopening Closed Store

Tulsa, OK – We could learn tomorrow (Thursday) the name of a new tenant at the old Pine and Peoria Albertson's store. The old store closed when Albertson's left Oklahoma in 2007, leaving the area without a name-brand supermarket.

The Tulsa Economic Development Corporation is ready to make a $2-million dollar loan available to the grocer who wants to reopen the store. The Tulsa City Council has agreed to back the loan.

A Whole Lotta Shaking Going On: At Chandler

Chandler, OK – CHANDLER, Okla. (AP) The U.S. Geological Survey says a small earthquake has been recorded near Chandler in central Oklahoma but appears to have caused no damage or injury. The geological survey reports the quake had a magnitude of 3.3 but authorities say they received no calls from residents.

McAlester, OK – Officials investigate 2nd inmate death

McALESTER, Okla. (AP) Prison officials are investigating a second death of an inmate at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.

Officials say 45-year-old Kenneth Gore died Monday night after guards found him beaten and lying on the floor of his cell.

Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie says Gore's cellmate, 24-year-old Aaron Prado, is considered the suspect.

Flag Trampled at Casino

Catoosa, OK –

CATOOSA, Okla. (AP) A Tulsa musician has been arrested after allegedly trampling an American flag during his act.

Records show the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service arrested Marion Gooding III, 30, lead guitarist with the band Smunty Voje, on Thursday at the Cherokee Casino.

The complaint was originally treating the U.S. flag with indignity, a felony under state law. It was later amended to outraging public decency, a misdemeanor.
