Ten Commandments in Haskell County

Denver, CO – Divided court upholds Ten Commandments ruling

DENVER (AP) A sharply divided federal appeals court has refused to reconsider a decision that a Ten Commandments monument on the lawn of the Haskell County courthouse is unconstitutional.

On a 6-6 vote the judges let stand the June 8 ruling by a three-judge panel that the monument endorses religion.

Seven votes are needed to reconsider the ruling.

County commissioners had asked the full court to rehear the case.

Million Miles Hits Milestone

Tulsa, OK – Tulsans have made getting into shape look easy as they have surpassed the 600,000 mile mark on their way to one million miles.

Since its beginning last October, the TulsaMillionMiles.com movement has successfully gained nearly 2,200 active members and averages approximately 274 miles per participant.

Okemah, OK – Reward increased in girls' slayings

OKEMAH, Okla. (AP) A coalition of Tulsa-area oilmen have helped increase to $160,000 the reward offered for information in the shooting deaths of two girls near the town of Weleetka last summer.

Lee Levinson of LPD Energy Corp. and Eddie Rongey of Dexxon Inc. spoke for the coalition Thursday during a news conference held by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation at the Okfuskee County Courthouse. The previous reward was $40,000.

Jobs Stay in Tulsa

Tulsa, OK – Limco to keep Tulsa plant open

TULSA, Okla. (AP) The parent company of Limco Airepair is dropping plans to move its Tulsa plant's operations and 150 jobs to North Carolina.

Company executives said Wednesday the Tulsa plant will remain in operation instead of being consolidated into a sister company's plant in Kernersville, N.C.

Wewoka, OK – Hundreds mourn slain deputies


WEWOKA, Okla. (AP) Hundreds turned out for a candlelight vigil to honor two Seminole County deputies who were shot to death.,

The 30 minute service on the lawn of the Seminole County Courthouse included prayers, thoughts from county officials and a letter of condolence from Seminole County jail inmates.

Deputies Chase Whitebird and Marvin Williams were shot and killed Sunday while serving an arrest warrant in Seminole.

Importing Inmates

Oklahoma City, OK – Law allows out-of-state maximum-security inmates

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Private prisons in Oklahoma soon could be housing maximum security inmates from other states under a new law that was approved in the waning days of the 2009 legislative session.

The language inserted in an omnibus corrections bill changes state policy that previously allowed only minimum and medium security from other states to be housed in state prisons.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma's third annual sales tax holiday is a little more than one week away.

The tax-free weekend will kick off on Friday, Aug. 7, giving families a chance to save money on back-to-school clothing while encouraging shoppers to support Oklahoma businesses.

This year's sales tax holiday ends at midnight on Sunday, Aug. 9. Clothing and shoes priced under $100 are exempt from all sales taxes during that period.

Roadway Reopened

Tulsa, OK – South-bound Highway-169 has now reopened after a traffic accident on the bridge caused a 20-pound piece of concrete to fall from the bridge. It slammed into the windshield of a late model SUV. The driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The expressway, south-bound, was closed, as well as the bridge deck, while the Oklahoma Department of Transportation made repairs. The repair work took about two hours.
