On this edition of ST, we speak with David Hallberg -- the first American to join the famed Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow as a principal dancer, and one whom The New Yorker once described as "the most exciting male dancer in the western world." Hallberg, now based in NYC, has a new memoir out, which he talks with us about.

Beginning today, and running through August 6th, the nonprofit Choregus Productions will present its second-annual Summer Heat International Dance Festival. The Festival starts with a Gala Performance (happening tonight, the 28th, at the Tulsa PAC, beginning 8pm) that will spotlight guest artists from leading dance companies from the United States, Canada, and Europe -- and this opener will be followed by a solid week of performances by the celebrated Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, The Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Brian Brooks Moving Company.

Our guest is Todd Cunningham, the Executive Director of Arts Alliance Tulsa, which is, per its website, "a United Arts Fund that strengthens and supports the arts for a greater Tulsa through fundraising, support services, audience development, and responsible investment and allocation of resources." Comprised of dozens of outstanding nonprofit arts groups from throughout the Tulsa area, Arts Alliance Tulsa has only been around for a couple of years now -- but its very presence highlights the important role that the arts play in our community'

Our guest on StudioTulsa is Priya Raju of the Tulsa-based Kripalaya Dance Academy. Raju is directing a production called "Sangama," which will be presented tonight (the 25th) and tomorrow night (the 26th) as part of the Tulsa PAC's SummerStage series for 2017. This word, as we learn, means "confluence," and thus Raju's show -- based in classical South Asian choreography but drawing on many other styles -- aims to not only celebrate cultural diversity but also to display how such diversity can be transcended through dance and music.

Our guest on this edition of ST is David Dawson, the noted British choreographer. Tulsa Ballet will soon stage one of Dawson's most celebrated works, "A Million Kisses to My Skin," as part of a three-piece presentation at the Tulsa PAC.

This coming weekend -- on March 24th, 25th, and 26th -- Tulsa Ballet will present "Swan Lake," the classic 19th-century ballet, with music by Tchaikovsky, about a young maiden who has been trapped in the form of a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. Our guest on StudioTulsa is Marcello Angelini, the Artistic Director of Tulsa Ballet, who tells us about this new production. It's a piece he knows very well, having danced it scores of times as a young dancer in his native Italy and then, later, as a member of the Kiev Institute of Dance in the former Soviet Union.

As part of its current 60th season, Tulsa Ballet is offering the world premiere of a special, newly-commissioned work -- a $1-million production entitled "Dorothy and the Prince of Oz." This full-length ballet will run throughout the weekend (Feb. 10th  through the 12th) at the Tulsa PAC, and we learn all about it on this edition of StudioTulsa. Our guest is Edwaard Liang, the Artistic Director for BalletMet in Columbus, Ohio; he was the choreographer for Tulsa Ballet's acclaimed "Romeo and Juliet" a few years ago, and he's also the choreographer for this exciting new work.

On this edition of StudioTulsa, an interesting chat with Basil Twist, the New York City-based puppeteer who was a MacArthur genius grant recipient in 2015. He has been universally acclaimed for his puppet-related design, construction, choreography, staging, and other work on productions such as "Symphonie Fantastique," "Dogugaeshi," "Red Beads", "Petrushka," "Hansel and Gretel," "Master Peter's Puppet Show," and so on.

On this edition of ST, we are discussing "Onegin," the universally acclaimed 20th-century ballet by the late choreographer John Cranko, with music by Tchaikovsky, which Tulsa Ballet will present this coming weekend (October 28th through the 30th) at the Tulsa PAC. This ballet -- based on the Alexander Pushkin verse-novel called "Eugene Onegin" -- offers the love story of Tatiana and Onegin. It's a rich and engaging tale of unrequited romance -- as full of complex drama as it is great dancing -- and you can learn more about this ballet here.

This weekend -- beginning on Friday night -- Tulsa Ballet will kick off its 60th Anniversary Season with a mixed-repertory evening of three world-premiere ballets featuring the choreography of Ma Cong, Alejandro Cerrudo, and Nicolo Fonte. On this edition of ST, we speak with Andrés Franco, the Music Director of the Signature Symphony at Tulsa Community College. Franco joins us to talk about the newly announced Pops and Classics concert series being presented by the Signature Symphony, and in particular the "Symphony of Tango" shows to be staged this weekend (on September 9th and 10th, at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education).

On this installment of StudioTulsa, we speak with Ken Tracy, the founder and executive director of the non-profit Choregus Productions, which started offering performances of world-class music and contemporary dance to Tulsa audiences ten years ago. Tracy joins us to talk about a newly created dance festival from Choregus, which will kick off at the Tulsa PAC on Saturday night, the 30th, and which will present dance companies from the US, Israel, and France/Algeria.

On this edition of StudioTulsa, we welcome back to our show Marcello Angelini, the longtime artistic director of Tulsa Ballet, who tells us about the company's latest production. It's a three-part evening -- entitled "Signature Series" -- that features some of Angelini's favorite ballets: "Serenade" by George Balanchine (music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky), "Remansos" by Nacho Duato (music by Enrique Granados), and "Infra" by Wayne McGregor (music by Max Richter).

On this edition of ST, we welcome back Marcello Angelini, the longtime artistic director of Tulsa Ballet. This weekend, March 18th through the 20th, Tulsa Ballet with present a three-part program entitled "Masters of Dance" -- it's an energetic and eclectic sampler featuring works by three of Europe's most esteemed choreographers, and it's meant to display the remarkable versatility of Tulsa Ballet.

On this installment of ST, we welcome back to our program the well-regarded, Ohio-based choreographer Edwaard Liang, who is currently working with Tulsa Ballet on a production of his special version of "Romeo and Juliet," which will be staged February 12th through the 14th. Shakespeare's tragic tale of two passionate yet ill-fated lovers will be presented in the Tulsa PAC, with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra playing Prokofiev's immortal score.

Last fall, about 40 local non-profit arts organizations joined Phil Lakin, CEO of the Tulsa Community Foundation, in launching Arts Alliance Tulsa (or AAT), a United Arts Fund that aims to provide funding for -- and audience-development support for -- the City of Tulsa's various cultural assets. (United Arts Funds, as noted at the AAT website, "seek to raise money to provide ongoing operating support to local arts institutions. Over the past 65 years, more than 100 communities across the country -- both large and small -- have established UAFs.

On this installment of ST, we chat with Marcello Angelini, artistic director of Tulsa Ballet. The company will soon present "The Taming of the Shrew" at the Tulsa PAC, with performances scheduled for October 23rd, 24th, and 25th. As noted of this production at the Tulsa Ballet website: "Shakespeare's famous comedy springs to life through masterful choreography by the legendary John Cranko, with music by Domenico Scarlatti freely arranged by Kurt-Heinz Stolze.

Tulsa Ballet gets its new season underway this evening at 8pm (Friday the 11th) with an all-new, three-part "Creations in Studio K" program. This show will feature world-premiere pieces from Jorma Elo (resident choreographer for Boston Ballet), Dwight Rhoden (artistic director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet), and Tulsa Ballet resident choreographer Ma Cong. Performances will happen September 11th through the 20th in Tulsa Ballet's 300-seat Studio K Theater.

On this installment of ST, we speak with Jennifer Alden, the co-founder and co-director of the Tulsa-based dance company, Portico Dans Theatre. Aldren tells us about this company's latest production, which, per the Portico Dans Theatre website, "combines the drama of an opera ('Pagliacci') and the physicality of aerial dance in 'Pagliacci Project.' The production employs youth and adult dancers on aerial silks, lyra, trapeze, and the Spanish web.

"Carmina Burana," the work that launched Tulsa Ballet's Resident Choreographer Ma Cong's career, premiered in 2006 to rave reviews and overwhelming popular acclaim. It was glowingly re-staged in 2010 -- and now comes an another encore of Ma Cong's masterpiece. Tulsa Ballet will collaborate with members of Tulsa Opera, Tulsa Oratorio Chorus, and the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra in a monumental production of "Carmina Burana" on October 31st, November 1st, and November 2nd at the Tulsa PAC.

The lasting and widespread influence that choreographer Martha Graham (1894-1991) had on the world of dance has been likened to the impact that Pablo Picasso had on painting, or that Aaron Copland had on music, or that Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. In other words, it's an influence that clearly continues to this day; Graham is commonly seen as a visionary who all but created what we now call modern dance, and who shaped the ideas and careers of countless dancers who came after her.

Our guest on this edition of ST is Marcello Angelini, the Artistic Director of Tulsa Ballet, who's now celebrating his twentieth season at the helm of the company. That Tulsa Ballet has both grown and thrived under Angelini's impressive leadership is a given in this community, and on today's show we are focusing on one flourishing aspect of the company that was created during Angelini's tenure: Tulsa Ballet II, which is the second or "pre-professional" company of Tulsa Ballet.

On this edition of ST, we learn about the highly regarded, Vancouver-based dance company, Kidd Pivot. As is noted of this small but accomplished collective at the company's website: "Integrating movement, original music, text, and rich visual design, Kidd Pivot's performance work is assembled with recklessness and rigor, balancing sharp exactitude with irreverence and risk.

Starting tonight, Friday the 2nd, Tulsa Ballet presents its final performance of the 2013-14 season, "Off the Floor: Creations in Studio K." This is the seventh year in which the ballet has offered a three-part "Creations in Studio K" evening, and this time around, it will feature world-premiere works by Jodie Gates ("The Angle of Incidence"), Young Soon Hue ("Contrast"), and Ma Cong ("Uniko"). Our guest on ST is Tulsa Ballet's artistic director, Marcello Angelini, who describes each of these works in detail.

On this edition of ST, we meet Ari Christopher, the Executive Director and Choreographer of Tulsa Modern Movement (or TuMM). Initiated in 2011, TuMM, per its website, "invigorates modern dance in Oklahoma by creating and performing new choreography, promoting life-long learning in the art of dance, and collaborating across disciplines." Christopher studied at the Martha Graham Center for Contemporary Dance and attended the Modern Dance BFA program at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City.

On this edition of ST, we're talking about two noteworthy cultural events happening in downtown Tulsa this weekend. First off, we discuss the final concert of the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra's current season, "Inside Out!," which happens tomorrow night (Saturday the 12th) at 7:30pm at the Tulsa PAC. We speak with Kari Caldwell, the principal cellist and board president of the TSO, who'll be the featured soloist as the symphony performs "Don Quixote" by Strauss. This concert will also feature Jennifer Higdon's "Blue Cathedral" and Haydn's "Symphony No.

On this installment of ST, we welcome Christopher Bruce, the highly regarded British choreographer and dancer who served as Artistic Director of the Rambert Dance Company from 1994 until 2002. Bruce, whom London's Daily Telegraph once called "the Nureyev of contemporary ballet," was appointed Houston Ballet's Associate Choreographer in 1989, and this world-renowned company has served as his artistic home in America since then.

On this edition of ST, we chat with Marcello Angelini, who's been the Artistic Director at Tulsa Ballet since 1995. Angelini tells us about the latest production from his world-renowned company, which opened over the weekend, on the 3rd, and which will continue through Sunday the 12th at Tulsa Ballet's Studio K space, near 45th Place and Peoria Avenue in Tulsa.

Tulsa Ballet will soon present "Lady of the Camellias," with performances scheduled for February 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the Tulsa PAC.

On this installment of ST, we speak by phone with Frank Chaves, the artistic director of River North Dance Chicago, a critically acclaimed dance organization, founded in 1989, that continues to perform at leading venues around the world. This company is recognized for its skilled and emotive dancers, stimulating music, and bold choreography. Chaves, who's also the company's main choreographer (and who's been with the company for two decades now), tells us that River North Dance Chicago is especially dedicated to merging jazz, ballet, and contemporary styles of movement.
