Choral Music

On this installment of StudioTulsa, we are joined by James Bagwell, who will be the guest conductor for the next Tulsa Symphony Orchestra concert (which is tomorrow night, Saturday the 8th, in the Tulsa PAC at 7:30pm). As noted of this upcoming performance at the Tulsa Symphony website: "Tulsa Oratorio Chorus joins Tulsa Symphony on a work that became the central and longest work of Brahms' career, the German Requiem.

For more than three decades, Carnegie Hall's beloved Link Up program has "linked" orchestras with students in grades 3 through 5 across the nation; the overall goal is for students to learn orchestral repertoire and fundamental music skills -- including creative work and composition -- by way of a hands-on, in-depth music curriculum.

We are pleased to welcome back to StudioTulsa Andrés Franco, the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Signature Symphony at TCC. That orchestra will continue its current series of "World Passport: A Symphonic Excursion" concerts on Saturday night, March 11th, at the VanTrease PACE here in Tulsa. Franco remains especially focused on presenting classical music from all over the world to local audiences, and he joins us to talk in detail about this upcoming concert, which will feature, among other works, Mozart's majestic "Requiem."

On this edition of StudioTulsa, we speak with Tim Sharp, the well-regarded and widely experienced Artistic Director and Conductor of the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus (or TOC). Later this week, on Thursday the 15th, the TOC will present a special holiday program, "The 'Glorias' of Christmas," beginning at 7:30pm in the Lorton Performance Center on the University of Tulsa campus. This concert will feature two separate and distinct (but equally wonderful) "Glorias" -- one by Antonio Vivaldi, the other by Francis Poulenc -- that both draw upon the same written text.

What's it like to score music for video games? And how does it differ from scoring for TV or movies? On this edition of ST, we speak with Lennie Moore, who has worked for more than two decades as a composer, orchestrator, and arranger of music for videogames, film, TV, and new media.

On this edition of StudioTulsa, an entertaining conversation with the celebrated British choral composer and conductor, Bob Chilcott, who sang in the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, as both a boy and a university student. Known for his compositions for children's choirs and other vocal groups, Chilcott has worked in a wide array of musical settings; he's been composing music of his own since 1997.

On this edition of ST, a chat with Bruce Adolphe, the New York-based pianist and composer who's probably best known for his long-running gig as "The Piano Puzzler" on the classical public-radio show, Performance Today. He'll be giving a free-to-the-public address on Saturday the 14th in Tyrrell Hall on the TU campus; the talk begins at 7pm and will focus on humor in music.

On this edition of ST, we're pleased to speak with Andrés Franco, the newly named Artistic Director and Conductor of the Signature Symphony at Tulsa Community College. The TCC Board of Regents approved Frano's hiring at a meeting held yesterday; he will replace Dr. Barry Epperley, the founder and longtime leader of this orchestra, who is retiring.

On this installment of ST, we speak with James Bagwell, a widely admired and diversely experienced classical music and choral conductor who's been on the faculty at Bard College since 2000, where he is currently the chair of the undergraduate music department and co-director of the graduate program in conducting. He's worked with organizations ranging from the American Symphony Orchestra and The Concert Chorale of New York to The Dessoff Symphonic Choir and the Jerusalem Symphony.

One week from tonight, on August 8th, Theatre Tulsa will unveil its much-anticipated new production of the epic musical, "Les Misérables," which will run in the Tulsa PAC's John H. Williams Theatre through August 24th. The rights for "Les Mis" -- a favorite, of course, of countless musical theatre buffs worldwide -- have only recently been made available to community theatre organizations, and Theatre Tulsa will open its 92nd season with this epic. The production will feature a cast of 70+ people in a 13-performance run.
