Metropolitan Opera on 88.7-1

Saturdays noon to 3pm

Launched in 1931, the Metropolitan Opera’s Saturday matinee broadcasts are the longest-running continuous classical music program in radio history. The 82nd season begins on December 8, 2012, with Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera, starring Sondra Radvanovsky, Marcelo Álvarez, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, kicking of the celebration of Verdi's 200th birthday.  Twenty-three broadcasts will be presented on the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network through May 11, 2013. Margaret Juntwait returns as the series’s host for her ninth season, joined by commentator Ira Siff. For the complete broadcast season, click here.

Metropolitan Opera Presents Operatic Rarity

When a classical music fan thinks of "Francesca da Rimini", one immediately thinks of Tchaikovsky's famous tone poem. In fact, this brief episodic story from Dante's Inferno, became the most famous opera of a relatively unknown Italian 20th Century composer, Riccardo Zandonai. Librettist Tito Ricordi, Jr. adapted a play drawn from this historical episode, and envisioned it as revival of the grand Italian operatic tradition, with the music of Italy's greatest operatic composer, Giacomo Puccini. Unfortunately for Ricordi, Puccini had no interest in reviving the grand operatic tradition.

The 2011-12 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with a live broadcast of Verdi’s Macbeth, starring Thomas Hampson in the title role. Gianandrea Noseda conducts his first Met performances of Verdi’s opera, adapted from the Shakespeare tragedy, which also stars German soprano Nadja Michael in her Met debut run as Lady Macbeth. Dimitri Pittas reprises his Macduff, seen in the 2007 premiere of Adrian Noble’s production, and Günther Groissböck sings the role of Banquo.

Metropolitan Opera: Khovanschina

Hear Mussorgsky's sweeping epic, set during the reign of Peter the Great, which is back on the Met stage for the first time in more than a decade, in a revival that is "blazingly sung, acted with conviction and conducted with intensity by Kirill Petrenko" (New York Times). The all-star Russian cast includes Olga Borodina, Ildar Abdrazakov, Anatoli Kotscherga, George Gagnidze, Misha Didyk, and Vladimir Galouzine.
