Tulsa, Oklahoma – On our show today, we speak with longtime teacher and education-advocate Esme Raji Codell. Her well-regarded book, "Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher's First Year," originally appeared about a decade ago --- and it has since become a minor classic among American gradeschool educators just beginning their careers. This book has just appeared in a new edition that features "25 tips for teachers and teachers-to-be." Chicago-based Codell speaks with our host Rich Fisher about her career in teaching --- and especially about the all-important first year that she spent in the classroom. Her particular passion is reading, and she makes some excellent points about the crucial role that reading aloud to children can play throughout their elementary-school experience.
