UPDATE: Mohawk Park Plane Crash

By Associated Press

Tulsa, OK – TULSA, Okla. (AP) Federal investigators say a Dallas pilot who was killed when his plane crashed in Tulsa was disoriented by freezing rain and pushed the aircraft beyond its stress limits.

Darrin Ogletree radioed flight controllers about an equipment failure shortly before his plane went down in Mohawk Park on Jan. 16, 2008.

According to a National Transportation Safety Board report, the gear was intact and showed no evidence of wear. The report indicated that the Aero Commander 500-B came apart as it spiraled toward the ground at nearly 180 mph.

Ogletree, 31, was hauling canceled bank checks from Tulsa International Airport to Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City.

The report said he reported he was having trouble with the gyroscope, a device that helps pilots find the horizon.
