Update on I-44

By Associated Press/KWGS News

Tulsa, OK – Sinkhole closes down I-44 in south Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (AP) If you normally use Interstate 44 in south Tulsa to get from one place to another, you'd better figure out a different way to travel Thursday morning.

Police are diverting traffic from I-44 after a sinkhole opened up that eventually reached across both eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic. Authorities say the hole first opened up about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, and steadily expanded.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews planned to work overnight on repairing the gap, but officials said it could be Thursday afternoon before the highway reopens.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. George Brown said rush-hour traffic would be affected Thursday morning, and urged motorists who normally use I-44 between Peoria and Lewis avenues to find other routes.
