TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $15,000 to University of Tulsa to develop a low-cost wireless device for monitoring water usage of hotel guest room showers.

The device will be designed to fit most new and existing hotel shower fixtures and will wirelessly transmit hotel guest water usage data to a central hotel accounting system.

The technology will provide hotel guests with the ability to monitor their daily water online or with a smartphone application and will assist hotel guests in modifying their behavior to help conserve water.

The device will then be marketed to the hotel industry to reduce costs by promoting water conservation among hotel guests.
