Uniforms on Hold

Tulsa, OK – superintendent backs off uniform requirement

(Information in the following story is from: Tulsa World, http://www.tulsaworld.com)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) The superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools says he's reconsidering part of a recommendation that would require all high school students to wear uniforms beginning this fall.

Keith Ballard told the Tulsa World on Wednesday that a deluge of emails from high school students and parents has caused him to rethink the uniform requirement. Ballard says officials will conduct surveys and focus groups to get a better idea of how they should proceed.

The school board is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to require that all elementary school students wear uniforms. Right now, 32 elementary schools, all junior high schools and East Central, McLain and Rogers high schools have the requirement.

Ballard says he may want to do something that would be enacted for fall 2012.
