On this edition of ST, we welcome back Machele Miller Dill, an assistant professor of musical theatre here at the University of Tulsa. Dill is directing "Spring Awakening," which the TU Department of Theatre will present in the Lorton Performance Center (here on the TU campus) from tomorrow night (the 11th) through Sunday afternoon (the 14th). Based upon --- believe it or not --- a 19th-century German expressionist play called "The Awakening of Spring," this musical premiered on Broadway in 2006 as a decidedly contemporary, rock-driven piece with music by the acclaimed alt-folk singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik. It went on to win eight Tony Awards, including those for Best Musical, Direction, Book, and Score. As Dill tells us, the "Spring Awakening" in question is, metaphorically speaking, puberty itself --- this is a work about moving (sometimes amid much pain or sorrow) from childhood into adulthood, and about thereby discovering one's body, sexuality, and identity. It's also, she adds, about how our society regards those who are making this often-difficult transition. To find out more about this musical, including details on tickets and show times, please visit this link from the TU website.
