Tulsa's American Theatre Company Presents "My Big Gay Italian Wedding"

Aired on Friday, July 17th.

On this edition of StudioTulsa, we speak with Anthony Wilkinson, the writer/creator of "My Big Gay Italian Wedding," a musical comedy that premiered off-Broadway in 2003...and then, eventually, after some revisions...opened on Broadway itself in 2010. This popular play is still staged in NYC, and it's also been presented -- by this point -- at venues all over the glove. It actually opened here in Tulsa last night, the 16th, in a production being offered by the Tulsa-based American Theatre Company through June 26th. Wilkinson visited Tulsa yesterday in order to take part in the ATC opening of "My Big Gay Italian Wedding," and he stopped by our KWGS studios while he was in town. You can learn more about this play, and can also get tickets for it, at this link. Also on today's program, commentator Barry Friedman rememebers Tom Skinner, a Tulsa-based singer-songwriter and "Red Dirt music" pioneer who died recently at age 61.

Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government. Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.
