Tulsa Warning Drivers to Stay Alert in Work Zones

KWGS

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — With more workers out on Tulsa's streets during the summer months, city officials are warning motorists to be more alert when they drive through construction zones.

Two contractors were killed in April after a driver hit them in a work zone. Two months later, a worker flagging traffic at night near a trench where workers were repairing a water main was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident.

Last year, 17 people were killed in Oklahoma highway work zones and 857 people were injured in 1,646 collisions in Oklahoma work zones.

Officials say the figures represent nearly a 183 percent increase in fatalities, 130 percent increase in injuries and a 170 percent increase in the number of work-zone accidents since 2004.
