Tulsa Vies for More Nonstop Flights by Hosting Airports Conference

Tulsa has a big opportunity this week to land more nonstop flights to and from the city.

Tulsa International Airport is hosting a conference that could attract more routes to the area. Airport spokeswoman Alexis Higgins said they bid for the conference last year as part of an air service initiative.

"We just thought it would be a great opportunity to be the host city and invite airports [not only] from across the country, but also airlines that attend this conference to Tulsa," Higgins said. "Many of these airlines have never been to Tulsa, and some of them have never even been to Oklahoma."

Representatives from 49 airports and 15 airlines will be in Tulsa through Thursday for the conference, which has been described as being similar to speed dating. Higgins said there’s nothing quite like showing off your town to airline executives in person.

"There are some that we're definitely targeting and then there are some that really just aren't a good fit for us, but it's a great opportunity to showcase Tulsa no matter really what our personal goals are as an airport," Higgins said.

During the conference, airport representatives get 25 minutes to meet with the airlines they’re interested in.
