The Tulsa Symphony Orchestra presents an exciting "Made in America" program.

Tulsa, Oklahoma – Our guest for StudioTulsa today is Edwin Outwater, the guest conductor who'll be leading the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra this weekend in an all-American program of music. The concert, called "Made in America," spotlights music written by several American composers over the last 100 years or so; it happens at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 14th, at 7:30pm. (For tickets, call 918-596-7111, or visit tulsapac.com.) Outwater is the Music Director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony in Ontario, Canada. Previously, he was the Resident Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony for a number of years, where he worked closely with Michael Tilson Thomas. Outwater has guest-conducted the TSO before --- and one of his first professional gigs in music was serving as Assistant Conductor of the Tulsa Philharmonic, way back when. More recently, he has guest-conducted the Chicago Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony, and the San Francisco Opera. He has also conducted the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the Symphony Orchestras of Baltimore, Houston, Detroit, Seattle, and Indianapolis, among others. His international appearances include leading the New Zealand Symphony, the Adeliade Symphony, the Malm Symphony, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Orquestra Sinfonica de Xalapa, and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. As Outwater tells our host Rich Fisher, this "Made in America" concert with the TSO on Saturday the 14th will be something of a departure from the standard night-at-the-symphony format --- to wit, the evening will exclusively feature short, often intense pieces from eight different American composers. On the bill, as we learn, are names like George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, John Adams, Charles Ives, and Randy Newman. (For more information on this program, visit the TSO's website at tulsasymphony.org.)
