Tulsa State Fair Won't Have Reserve Deputies for Security This Year

Tulsa State Fair

Security will be a little different at this year’s Tulsa State Fair.

"This year, instead of using reserves to serve at the fair in addition to 12 full-time deputies, we will be fully staffed by full-time deputies of the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office," said TCSO Public Information Officer Justin Green.

An independent review of the sheriff's office is looking at each division, including the reserve program.

"And at this time, that assessment has not been completed," Green said. "So, based upon the fact that, that assessment's not been completed, we made the decision to not put our reserves at the fair this year."

The volunteer program was suspended after a reserve shot and killed an unarmed suspect in April.

The number of deputies assigned will depend on how many people attend the fair. The sheriff’s office intends to provide the same number of deputies without pulling them from other assignments. That will mean some overtime costs.

The Tulsa State Fair begins Oct. 1.
